strike a chord

Thumbiano is a simplified version of an ancient African instrument, Kalimba. Get a taste of upcycling and make one yourself with broken umbrella ribs and a wooden board obtained from wine boxes. With 8 notes in total, you can play any musical pieces contained in an octave.

Kevin Cheung

From a product design background, Kevin is sort of a “ragpicker” — with ingenuity, he creates multiple values from what is unwarrantedly wasted.

For instance, his first upcycling project, Boombottle, is a speaker system made with discarded plastic containers and assembled in sheltered workshop. His ongoing endeavours demonstrate how designers can balance the three interconnected domains of ecology, economies and society.

Now a Good Neighbour in the Blue House co-living scheme, he is practising with his neighbours a more sophisticated waste sorting that is adapted from an exemplary case example in rural Japan.
